The Skilled Stream of Australia's Migration Program is designed to attract migrants who have skills or outstanding abilities that will benefit the Australian economy.
The criteria for these visas vary but generally the main applicant must:
Independent migrants are selected on the basis of their education, skills and work experience, and their potential to contribute quickly to the Australian economy. They are not sponsored by an employer or relative in Australia.
Skilled workers and their families can be sponsored by either a family member who is a permanent resident or Citizen of Australia or a State and Territory Government.
Distinguished Talent
This is a small category for distinguished individuals with special or unique talents of benefit to Australia. Successful applicants under this category generally include sports people, musicians, artists and designers, all of whom were internationally recognised as outstanding in their field.
The SIR visa helps states, territories and regional authorities meet their needs in addressing critical skill shortages, while providing skilled migrants with the opportunity to experience the Australian lifestyle.
Successful applicants who have been sponsored by a state or territory government will be granted a three-year temporary visa, with settlement in regional/low growth areas of Australia.
After two years of temporary residence including one year of full time work, a SIR visa holder can apply for permanent residence under a range of existing visa options.
The visa also gives overseas students who have studied in Australia a chance to stay and contribute to regional growth.
There are also lists produced by each State of Australia that may apply to State and Territory Sponsored visa applicants.
