Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa | Skilled Graduate


Subclass 485

This is an 18 month temporary visa for overseas students who have obtained an Australian qualification whilst the holder of a Student Visa in Australia as as result of at least two years study. Their nominated occupation must be on the Skilled Occupation List. The visa allows applicants who are unable to pass the points test to remain in Australia for 18 months to gain the skills and experience needed to applied for a permanent or provisional Skilled Visa or pursue an employer sponsored visa. No points test applies.

Skilled Nominated or Sponsored (Provisional)

Subclass 489

This is a temporary visa for people with an occupation listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).  Applicants must be nominated by a State or Territory government, or sponsored by an eligible relative. Applicants must pass a points test. There are processing priorities given to some occupations.

This visa is generally by invitation only. An Expression of Interest must be lodged with SkillSelect.

However, if you hold one of the following visas and have complied with visa conditions, you may be eligible to apply for a subclass 489 visa without lodging an expression of interest:
  • Skilled - Independent Regional (Provisional) - Subclass 495

  • Skilled - Designated Area Sponsored (Provisional) - Subclass 496

  • Skilled - Regional (Provisional) - Subclass 475

  • Skilled - Regional (Provisional) - Subclass 487

Skilled Recognised Graduate

Subclass 476

This is an 18 month temporary visa for overseas students who have obtained an eligible engineering qualification from a recognised institution in the last two years. It allows recent engineering graduates to gain up to 18 months of skilled work experience. They must have obtained a Bachelor Degree, Masters Degree, Doctoral Degree or Postgraduate Diploma in a major sequenece of study or specialisation in engineering.
