Student Visas 500 Australia

Student visas are a requirement for any person from outside of Australia wishing to complete study in Australia.

Various subclasses are designed to meet the needs of all courses and have been carefully planned, each subclass has typically had distinctive requirements to meet. The current framework is dependent on the level of study and level of assessment which is linked to country of origin.

All students must be enrolled in a registered course prior to applying for their visa and must meet the financial, health and character criteria specific to their visa before their application is granted.

The following Student Visa options will be superseded by a new framework as of 30th June 2016, however are still open for application lodgments:

Class TU Subclass 570

  • English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS): 

    Applies to stand-alone English language courses that lead to a Certificate I, II, III or IV, or that result in no formal Australian award .

Class TU Subclass 571

  • Primary or secondary school course: 

    Applies to primary, junior secondary or senior secondary school courses, and approved secondary school exchange programs.

Class TU Subclass 572

  • Vocational education and training: 

    Applies to Certificates I, II, III or IV (except ELICOS), Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Vocational Graduate Certificate or Vocational Graduate Diploma courses.

Class TU Subclass 573

  • Higher education: 

    Applies to a Bachelor Degree, Associate Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Masters by coursework, Higher Education Diploma or Higher Education Advanced Diploma.

Class TU Subclass 575

  • Non-award: 

    Applies to non-award foundation studies, or other full-time courses or components of courses not leading to an Australian award.

Class TU Subclass 580

  • Student Guardians: 

    International students studying in Australia on a student visa may require a guardian if they are under 18 years of age. There may also be exceptional circumstances where a student over 18 years of age may need a guardian for religious or cultural reasons.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Impending changes to Student Visa Framework

Commencing the 1st July 2016, there have been changes in Student visa application requirements in accompaniment with the changed Student Visa frameworks.

The previous Student Visa framework has been condensed in order to streamline the existing Visa categories into two NEW subclasses;

  • Subclass 500 (Student)

  • Subclass 590 (Student Guardian)

Aligned to the new framework there has also been a revision of the subsequent fee’s and criteria. All students applying for a visa must meet the financial, health and character criteria specific to their visa subclass.
